The works of Jamal Badawi
There is far more to Jamal Badawi than his speeches and debates about the Quran and Islam. There's his membership as a board of director in the Muslim Brotherhood which was outed by the U.S. government and his associations with organizations in the Middle East chaired by a man, Yusef Qaradawi, who is banned from the U.S. for his terrorist views and positions. Then there is his massive contradiction of the North American Fatwa issued in 2005 which bears his name and his writing about martyrdom made a year later on Islamonline.
if this peaks your interest, please go to Fooling the Masses in Oklahoma. There you will get the truth about Badawi. Read it, digest it, study it. Take you time.
The following are some of the works of Jamal Badawi which I listed here in anticipation of his debate with Christian Pastor Rexa Safa:

North American Politics:
...There is nothing called 'political Islam' there is Islam that includes politics, economics, social structure as part of its teaching. It's a complete way of living in that sense.
...if a Muslim believes that there is any human being who has the right to make laws other than Allah then obviously this is total divergence from the path of Islam.
Or any person who believes that secularism is superior to the law of Allah, he's violating the basic Quranic tenets (WA man ahsan min Allahi hukmun li qawmi yuminu) 'who is better in giving us the rule in judgment than Allah, Our Creator'. That's one issue that all Muslims should agree to.
The second point that if a person participates in an activity or process which is completely opposed to the foundations of Islam in its basic beliefs, then of course that would be also totally out...
Misconceptions in the Quran:
The article quotes Dr. Badawi: “It is a common misconception, especially after the tragic events of September 11th, that the attitude of hatred and violence towards non-Muslims is embedded in Islamic sources.” He, in contrast, “contends that the Prophet Mohammed did not preach violence against people of other faiths.”
“The challenge,” says Badawi, “is that many say that the Qur’an calls Jews and Christians infidels. It’s a term that many incorrectly translate as kafir. But infidel means someone who has no faith. How could Jews and Christians be infidels when the Qur’an is clear that they worship the one God, the God of Abraham?”
“One passage,” says the article, “often is quoted by those who say Islam is a religion of violence. It’s an exhortation to kill unbelievers wherever one finds them. [Badawi is referring to Sura 9:5.] However, Badawi says the passage refers to pagan Arabs of Mohammed’s time. ‘The verse has nothing to do with Jews and Christians,’ he said.”

1/29/06: Martyrdom in Islam: Let's Discuss It Jamal Badawi
What is the difference between a martyr and suicide bomber? Answer Not every martyr is a "suicide" bomber. As indicated earlier, a person who is killed in the battlefield is also a martyr; also a woman who dies in a difficult child birth is also a martyr (of a lower degree).
Not every "suicide" bomber is a martyr if that action violates any of the conditions detailed in the answers to the first question

Gender Equity in Islam by Jamal Badawi (see footnote 14 about hitting one's wife which is permitted in Islam)
Badawi sauys to lightly tap "idrib" a disobedient wife but the critics says: Idrib is used repeatedly in the Quran. In nearly every use of the word it clearly comes across as meaning to beat, scourge, or strike (hard), as in, “strike (Idrib) off their heads, strike (Idrib) off the very tips of their fingers!” – Quran (8:12)

(seems to blame everything else but Islam, esp. the media)
In 2003 in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune wrote that:
Badawi claimed that the Prophet Mohammed did not preach violence against people of other faiths, Badawi says “a careful reading of the Qur’an leaves no doubt” that “Islam is a religion of peace and nonviolence.” He asserts that “when people quote just one Qur’anic passage, they pull the meaning out of its historical context and out of the complex system of translation from Arabic to another language.”
One passage [Sura 9:5] often quoted by those who say Islam is a religion of violence, is an exhortation to kill unbelievers wherever one finds them. According to Badawi, however, the passage refers to pagan Arabs of Mohammed’s time. "The verse has nothing to do with Jews and Christians," he explains. "... It is a common misconception, especially after the tragic events of September 11th, that the attitude of hatred and violence towards non-Muslims is embedded in Islamic sources. ... The challenge is that many say that the Qur’an calls Jews and Christians infidels. It’s a term that many incorrectly translate as kafir. But infidel means someone who has no faith. How could Jews and Christians be infidels when the Qur’an is clear that they worship the one God, the God of Abraham?”
In the foregoing assertions, Badawi does not address the Qur’an's exhortation (Sura 9:29) to “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, [even if they are] of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians], until they pay the Jizya (tax) with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”
Dr. Jamal Badawi, the well-known Islamic scholar from Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Canada made a convincing case, based on textual and historical background, from the Quran and Traditions, that the term "Holy War" is non existent in the Quran; "Kufr" does not mean "infidel"; and Allah is Lord of all "beings". Islam, according to Badawi, is thus pluralistic. That if killing "Kafir" is permitted, does one kill ones' wife for being Kafir -as Muslims are allowed to marry ladies who are "People of the Book". He also decried the notion that Islam sanctioned "Holy War", "killing of non-believers wherever found" and "subjugating followers of all other religions." as often presented by some antagonists...
He affirmed that the argument of some scholars on the basis of Muslim history and practice, or juristic opinions could not replace the Quran
and Hadith-the two primary sources of Sharia. He advocated an integrated contextual approach in understanding these texts, pointing out common pitfalls in their interpretation
Note:
Islam forbids suicide. (Koran 4:29-30). But a prominent influential Muslim cleric Yusaf al-Qaradawi, states that since the intention of the bombers is not to kill themselves, but to kill the enemies of Allah, “It’s not suicide, it is martyrdom in the name of God, Islamic theologians and jurisprudents have debated this issue.
Referring to it as a form of jihad, under the title of jeopardising the life of the mujahideen. It is allowed to jeopardise your soul and cross the path of the enemy and be killed.” Paradise is guaranteed for those that “slay and are slain” for Allah (Koran 9:111).

Questions I would like Badawi to answer:
Are you going to rise to the challenge by the two Jewish groups in Canada and withdraw any support by stopping your written contributions to Islamonline for publishing the poem, "How to Behead"?
HOw long have you been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood?
Your name is on the incorporating papers for the Muslim American Society along with two other names. Both these men have discussed the relationship of the Muslim American Society to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Why was your name in the phone book of Ismail Elbarrasse, an assistant to HAMAS leader Musa Abu Marzook?
Why do you associate with ogranizations chaired by Yusef Qaradawi who is banned from the U.S. for his support of terrorism? You do realize you are known by the associations you keep.
