..."Since the 2001 terrorist attacks, we have frequently received credible reports that al Qaeda remains committed to attacking the United States and U.S. interests abroad. Al Qaeda’s primary threat continues to come from the tribal areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, but we are seeing persistent activity elsewhere, from Europe to the Horn of Africa and Yemen. Of particular concern to the FBI are individuals who can travel with fewer restrictions to these areas of extremist activity and then enter the United States under less scrutiny..."

The American national's most important meeting was with Ilyas Kashmiri, the head of Al Qaeda's hardcore 313 Brigade. The unit's name refers to the number of men the Prophet Mohammed had with him at the Battle of Badr in 624. Kashmiri's importance in Pakistan's terrorist network is such that the Pakistani government has placed a $600,000 reward on his head, while the American military has fired three Hellfire missiles at it.
Brigade 313 is actually a coalition of five of the world's deadliest, Muslim terrorist organizations: Lashkar-e-Toiba; Jaish-e-Muhammad; Harkatul Jihad al-Islami; Harkatul Mujahideen al-Alami; and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Some believe the unit was created in 1991 to combat India in Kashmir, while another version has it forming a decade later in response to the American invasion of Afghanistan. What can't be disputed, however, is its direct links with both al Qaeda and the Taliban.

But an Associated Press investigation — based on recently declassified documents, extensive court records, CIA investigative notes and interviews with former intelligence officials — reveals publicly for the first time Al-Jawary's deep involvement in terrorism beyond the plot that led to his conviction.
Government documents link Al-Jawary to Black September's murderous letter-bombing campaign targeting world leaders in the 1970s and a botched terrorist attack in 1979. Former intelligence officials suspect he had a role in the bombing of a TWA flight in 1974 that killed 88 people.
"He's a very dangerous man," said Mike Finnegan, the former FBI counterterrorism agent who captured Al-Jawary. "A very bad guy." Read more.

01/20/09 Florida TRIAL SET: Sami Al-Arian: A federal judge has declined to dismiss contempt charges against Sami Al-Arian, saying a jury should decide whether he has committed a crime by refusing to testify in a case against an Islamic charity. The ruling means a jury will convene in Alexandria, Va., in March. In 2005, Al-Arian accepted a plea agreement with federal prosecutors after a six-month trial in Tampa, where he was acquitted on most of the charges he aided terrorists in the Middle East, while the jury deadlocked on two charges. He later pleaded guilty to one count of helping associates of Palestinian Islamic Jihad - branded a terrorist group by the U.S. - with nonviolent activities. Al-Arian contends his plea agreement exempted him from testifying again and that he would be deported to the Middle East when his sentence was completed in early 2007. WUSF
