Today, the U.S. and British embassies were closed in Yemen amid security concerns related to al Qaeda, a global Islamist organization that declared war against America in 1996 and again in 1998. Was this move a sign of weakness? Our enemy may think so.
Anwar al-Awlaki was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico and is now a hard-line Muslim cleric who once was on the FBI's radar but slipped out of the country a few years ago. He eventually moved to Yemen and is believed to be a key partner with al Qaeda there now. He influenced the Ft. Hood terrorist, whose attack was really an act of war, and he also possibly influenced the failed "underwear bomber," in another act of war that intended to kill all on board Flight 253.
This morning, John Brennan, Obama's top counter-terrorism aide stumbled and fumbled on CNN when asked if Ft. Hood was a terrorist attack. He replied; "I think we're still taking a look at that. I mean, the term terrorism is defined many different ways. In my mind, Major Hasan carried out this attack, it was inspired, I think, by some of the rantings and the rhetoric of individuals like al-Awlaki. And so they're looking at this right now. It's certainly an act of murder. It was wanton murder. It was wanton slaughter of U.S. military officers."
God help us when our own government will not step up to the plate about our enemies.
In Britain, al-Awlaki influenced Muslims via video feedson at least seven occasions despite being banned from travel to that country in 2006. Two times he spoke at centres who received government money to prevent Islamic extremism!
...The 38-year-old's extremist ideology is laid bare in his pamphlet '44 Ways to Support Jihad' in which he declares: "The hatred of kuffar [non-Muslims] is a central element of our military creed" and "arms training is an essential part of preparation for Jihad".
His role in influencing Abdulmutallab, who is suspected of attempting to blow up a flight to Detroit on Christmas Day, has only become apparent in the past 48 hours. Abdulmutallab, who moved to the Yemen in August 2009 after completing an engineering degree at University College London, has told the FBI he made contact with al-Qaeda through a preacher he met over the internet. This man is now thought to be al-Awlaki, who himself moved to the Yemen after leaving Britain in 2004...
There's no confirmation from U.S. officials the "underwear bomber" and al Awalaki were linked but it's suspected.
Are you wondering if al Awlaki might have influenced Muslims in the U.S. by video feed, too? Oh wait - just go to YouTube where his 44 Ways to Support Jihad is available for all:
Note: It is not gory but full of hate.

...The hatred of kuffar is a central element of our military creed. We need to realize that Allah will not grant us victory as long as we still have some love towards his enemies in our hearts....

Hate rants by Alleged al-Qaeda boss Anwar al-Awlaki on sale in London
...Yesterday our investigators found a wide selection of al-Awlaki's hate-filled tirades on sale in an Islamic bookshop yards from the East London Mosque which was regularly attended by Abdulmutallab.

From what I read, Al-Awlaki was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, not Albuquerque.
