FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Calvey Blasts CAIR Hypocrisy
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 26, 2010) – Kevin Calvey, candidate for Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District, today condemned the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for hypocritically applauding a decision to disinvite the Rev. Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, from speaking at the Pentagon. The pastor was to speak on May 6, the National Day of Prayer.
“CAIR claims to be a civil rights organization, but they have shown their own biases by heaping criticism on a Christian leader,” Calvey said. “Instead of upholding freedom of speech for all Americans, even those they disagree with, CAIR is merely pushing its own agenda of identity politics and division.”
The FBI and U.S. Department of Justice named CAIR as a co-conspirator in a major terrorist fundraising case. Calvey says CAIR has failed to address frequent anti-American protests by Muslims.
“I do not understand why CAIR leaders spend their time attacking the Rev. Graham instead of working to improve Muslim-American relations,” Calvey said. “I find it reprehensible that CAIR leaders would rather attack a peaceful Christian leader than condemn violent Muslim extremists like Hamas. CAIR needs to be more concerned with its own image than with the Rev. Graham’s opinions.”
Calvey is a small businessman and a conservative former state representative from Del City. Calvey volunteered to deploy to Iraq as a captain in the Army National Guard in 2007, and his mission in Iraq was to prosecute al Qaeda leaders and other terrorists in the Iraqi court system. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service. Calvey and his wife, Toni, live in Oklahoma City with their baby, Anastasia.
