The overall tone of an article written by Nura Maznavi, an attorney for Muslim Advocates titled Law enforcement should not undermine American values was unmistakable. This Muslim rights attorney claims listening to fiery religious or political speeches or practices are protected rights and took strong issue when the FBI told a Muslim community in Houston it could be a sign of radicalization.
"...The agent told community leaders that if someone recently converted and listened to fiery religious or political speeches, this could be a sign of their “radicalization,” and should be reported to the FBI. Shockingly, these religious and political activities—not purchasing bomb-making materials or attending an al Qaeda training camp, but expressive acts protected by the Constitution—were cited as worthy of reporting to law enforcement. When the FBI uses unpopular speech or religious practice as a measure to deem individuals suspicious and worthy of investigation, it bears a social cost: an erosion of our country’s core values of freedom of speech and religion..."
Maznavi taunts the FBI as other Islamic groups do. Did she distinquish religious or political speeches that may encourage Muslims or any group to fight or harm others as a problem? Nope. She went on ...
...The message of my organization and lawyers nationwide to community leaders is consistent: talk to a lawyer before speaking with the FBI Why? The FBI is a law enforcement agency. Since September 11, 2001, the FBI’s number one job has been to investigate and prosecute terrorism cases, not right-wing extremism, or eco-terrorism, but terrorist acts committed by Muslims.
...In the meantime, imams, civic leaders and all community members have an important role to play: refrain from mistaking unpopular political views or religious practice—activities protected by the First Amendment—for evidence of acts of violence that should be reported to the FBI.
Did she just imply one should keep one's mouth shut? She said to report this kind of stuff could send a troubled person to jail like the foiled Portland Christmas tree lighting bomber who was captured on a cell phone video ranting against the West. The poor little fella was just trying to find his way as a young man and became the target of a major FBI investigation, she wrote. Although she said American Muslims should support efforts to keep our nation safe if they know of an imminent threat the overall tone of her article was disturbing.
Islamic groups like Muslim Advocates, CAIR and others like groups lash out and call others Islamophobics or bigots when they express their free speech right to criticize their tactics, history, political Islam and so on.
